December's topic is holiday safety. With the month being filled with celebrations and gatherings, safety is more of a concern then ever. Below you will find some holiday safety tips. In addition to following these tips please make sure that you have a proper working smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, and fire extinguisher. 

Christmas trees should be kept away from any flame or forms of ignition. If you have a cut or live tree, make sure that it has plenty of water. Remove the tree as soon as you notice the tree dropping needles or appears to be extremely dry. A dry Christmas tree can become fully engulfed with-in a few minutes. Click here to see a video demonstration. If you use an artificial tree, make sure that it is flame-retardant. No matter what type of tree you use, do not block the exits with it.

Christmas lights need to be checked for damaged and frayed cords, missing or broken light bulbs and is UL approved prior to use. You also need to make sure that you are using lights marked for outdoor use only outdoors and inside use only inside. Do not use lights on metal trees. Unplug lights when you leave your house or go to bed. Click here to see an example why. Limit the use of extension cords to a minimum.

Extension cords should be avoid if all possible, they are to be used for short time use only. If you need to use one inspect it prior to use. Make sure that the cord is not frayed, kinked, or worn. The cord needs to be the proper wire size for the application it will be used with. Cords need to be UL approved. Do not use indoor rated cords outside. Make sure cords are placed in a position that would cause a tripping hazard.

Candles should be extinguished when you leave the room or go to sleep. They should be always be in a holder that is on a sturdy surface. Make sure that a container is in place to catch the melting wax. Do not place a lit candle in or near any type of decorative vegetation or trees. Additional tips can be found here.
